Another great Blues Night at the Lincoln Inn : The Greg Izor Band

Hi Ho Local TMB Fans !

Another great night at the Lincoln Inn's Blues Night, Thank to the Greg Izor Band! Greg is back in town from his current digs in Austin, TX while Vermont's very own Blues harp proto-legend waits to get back to his ol' stomping grounds of New Orleans.

Greg's talents not only including playing powerhouse, "I-Give-It-All-So-You-Might-Have-To-Hold-Me-Back" Blues harmonica and rich vocals but also can put together a great Blues group. His circle of friends include many of the great players in our area today let alone everyone he knows from gigging in New Orleans. For example, it was great to see Jason Corbiere from Swanton at the skins laying down the beats and rythmns that support and carry a great Blues performance. Jason shows you that the drums are an instrument equal to those who get to stand in the front. The two bass players, Rob Meehan and Tom Buckley, were locking with Jason keeping the vibe alive and the groove, deep & steady. The crew's guitarist, Dan Whalen, played some seriously smokin' solos on his Gibson (Epiphone?) with his thumb and without a pick. (so cool) I hated to leave. You could tell that they had to hold back ... just a little ... being it was Thursday night ... in soon-not-be-so sleepy Essex Junction, VT.... It was easy to see that The Greg Izor Band was just warming up and could easy go late into the night bringing us tight, Vermont-granite-solid straight-ahead-authentic-from-the-gut-and-below-the-belt Blues.

I do enjoy the Blues Night at the Lincoln Inn each time I go. I love live Blues music especially in the right venue. The music room at the Lincoln Inn is one of my favorite spots in our area. You actually get to sit down, order good food & beverages, listen to local musicians strutting their stuff, watch sports in the next room and still there is plenty of room to dance if you want. It is informal, intimate, and family-friendly. Oh by the way, no one is paying me to write or say this. I think it is important to go to a great local business, listen to live music and run into friends and neighbors. Since there is no cover charge, there is no risk. I have to add that outside of Burlington, I know of no other establishment which features live music seven days a week. I hear the other nights are just as fun. I will try to get to the Jazz nights soon. If you are worried about music quality, don't be. These are not high school garage bands who begged their way onto the riser but real committed musicians who just love to play and share with others. I know they can't be paid more than my typical weeknight bar tab so they sure not doing for the money. Well...definitely less money than it would fill my mini-van with super unleaded... maybe by only a couple of bucks... ;-)

So...Happy Holidays! Now, don't stay home, grab some friends and family get out and listen to some Live Music...somewhere! Anywhere! It is just fun to watch and support your neighbors. For example, I had the great opportunity to meet singer/songwriter, Dawna Hammers, who was there cheering on Greg and the boys. Dawna told me about the great harp track that Greg laid down for one of her latest songs. With fingers crossed, hopes high and through the benefits of clean living, maybe "Those Monday Blues" will be granted a special preview of her song.

Cheers,

What do I listen to?

Hi Ho TMB Fans -

What do I listen to when WWPV is not broadcasting? Dare I say? I do.

Until WWPV starts broadcasting at 10am EST, I have been listening to a Blues show out of a wonderful public/education/community radio station, KRVM Eugene, OR. Specifically, KVRM's "Breakfast With the Blues" show, Mon - Fri, 5:30am - 8:00am PST, Sat. 5:30am - 9:00am PST, & Sun: 7am - 11am. Now...don't forget to add 3 hours to the times *and* do not forget to tune into WWPV 88.7 FM as well. ;-) Let me say...I regularly listen to the expertly delievered Blues programming on KVRM...but...it is so much fun to listen to the high schoolers DJ their own shows. I would like to do more of that locally. The only problem with listening to the various "Breakfast With The Blues" shows is the impact on my self-esteem and how much my own show needs to improve just to keep up. :-)

Sincerely, KVRM is just but one example of educational/community radio around the United States staffed and run by dedicated volunteers and funded, in part or whole, by donations from individuals and businesses. VPR, WWPV, and WRUV are just three examples of community & public radio in Vermont alone. There are more. I encourage you to seek them out and support them with your listenership and donations. With the advent of the Internet, it is bring more of these stations to our attention and through our PC speaker systems.

In summary, just remember to support your friends & neighbors whether they be local musicians, DJs, local public/community radio and live music venues.

Note: Don't confuse "Breakfast with the Blues" with the great local Blues band Blues for Breakfast. Actually, since they are both good, there really isn't really any confusion there. It's all good.

Cheers,

OneChord

The New Music Just Keeps Coming : Phantom Blues Band, "Out of the Shadows"

Hi HO TMB Fans -

Wow...I just received this CD from Deltagroove just yesterday and will write more once I stop playing it. The Phanton Blues Band's "Out of the Shadows" is just great. This crews shows why they are good enough to share the stage and backup Taj Mahal but have the depth, passion and talent to stand alone. They bring the funk, caribbean, gospel and R&B equally well on this CD. This is a quick review. More of a "Heads-up" because I will definitely be playing two or three tracks on this coming Monday's show. You should look for these tracks in the "New Music Spotlight" segment of my show, the first tracks after 6pm station ID. Once again, WWPV and "Those Midnight Blues" is bringing you great new music before it hits the streets. "Out of the Shadows" has a release date of November 21 but it is too good to sit on until then.

Cheers,

OneChord.

Another Great WWPV Show : Mary-Go-Around !

Yo Yo TMB Friends & Fans -

If you have the opportunity and you heard me plug this show last Monday, take a pause and listen to another great WWPV show, the Mary-Go-Around w/ DJ Mary "Program Director Optimus Maximus" Kohut. Each show has an interesting musical theme. A few weeks ago it was "Funk" (great show), last week, it was "Singer-Songwriters" (another great show), well, I think you get the idea. She even tipped her hand a little bit and mentioned that she would be doing a Blues show as well. (woo hoo!)

As usual, you can call the studio at 802-654-2887 or send an IM to AOL Screen Name of WWPV887. If you are outside of the listening area and have access to the internet, tune into the WWPV webstream at http://wwpv.org

All of the WWPV DJs love those phone calls and IMs. We love the feedback and suggestions.

Cheers & Best Wishes,

New Music is Everywhere : Darin Bennett and Paul Mark & the Van Dorens

Greetings esteemed fans of TMB -

The new music just keeps coming in for different angles which, thankfully, is great. Because it is those unexpected turns that often yield the most sinceren, if not best, surprises.

While I have a MySpace blog, I am not a huge fan of MySpace but it is a great place to check out the new music scene. A number of artists send "friend invites" which I am sure that others may accept as reflex while I in my unlearned arrogance prefer to investigate a little more deeply than "that picture is hott" criteria. I ask myself particular questions like "Do I like the music?" or "Do I like this person?" or probably my most important criteria, "Would I want to have coffee with this person or persons?" Call me a throwback, a dinosaur, and hopeless luddite, but I do have my standards. So when artists send me an invite, well, I give their tracks a sound hearing. When I heard Darin Bennett MySpace tracks after receiving his invite, I was interested. I love the fresh modern sound he brings to his slide guitar work. It is a fusion of modern Blues styles which I have grown to truly appreciate and seek out for the acoustical part of my show. Darin isn't just copying the Masters of the Delta Blues but extending and perhaps demonstrating what they would do if these forebearers of the Blues found themselves in our modern times. I have recently acquired a copy of Bennett latest CD, "20 Scarlet Monkeys". My difficulty deciding which two tracks to play first. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

My second surprise was found in the "inbox" at WWPV. WWPV gets tons of new music CDs and promos. I mean TONS. Most of it is Indie Rock and a few other genres. Whatever Blues or Roots music that gets sent well...if you can't say anything good... When I saw a CD titled "Trick Fiction" by Paul Mark & the Van Dorens, I thought it was another self-produced homebrewed CD from a local high school AV club. I was so completely and utterly wrong. The is Blues/Roots at its best, eleven original songs from Paul Mark and his NYC-based Blues band. The first track, "Fritos, BBQ, & Scotch" is even better sounding than its title. Each track is wonderfully executed with variety and style to keep boredom and repetition stranded at the airport. Paul Mark brings honest, gut-driven vocals to his original tunes and the Van Dorens stand behind him as solid as proverbial diamonds with a cutting edge to boot.

I am looking forward to play these new tracks and hope you like them as much as I do.

Cheers,

OneChord.

Hot New Release : Aynsley Lister, "everything I need' & Canned Heat Instrumentals 1967 to 1996

Hi HO TMB Fans -

Great new releases just keep rolling into my inbox. Due to the generosity of Ruf Records, WWPV has received a copy of Aynsley Lister's, "everything I need". You heard me rave about "Pilgrimage Mississippi to Memphis" which he did in combination with Eria Lyytinen & Ian Parker. Well, this England-born & bred 21-year old more than ably acquitts himself with this effort. This is just excellent, Vermont granite-solid Blues Rock. I definitely look forward to playing more than just couple of tracks from this CD in the coming weeks.

Another wonderful suprise was the CD Canned Heat's "Instrumental 1967 to 1996". I haven't had time to listen to the whole CD but... ok...I like it. I do love instrumentals and this CD is no exception.

I hope to do more proper review of these two CDs in the near future. As you all know, if I can't say anything nice, I just won't say anything.

If you want me to play one or more tracks from these CDs, just contact me during the show via telephone or IM. I will be happy to do my best to accomomdate your requests.

Best Wishes,

One Chord

Still more great new music : Dr. Duke Tumatoe, Deanna Bogart, & new Blind Pig compilation

Hi Ho & Salutations TMB Fans !

Wow...still more great new Music, this week I received new releases from Blind Pig. Two new CDs, "You Got The Problem" from Dr. Duke Tumatoe and "Real Time" by Deanna Bogart.

Dr. Duke's collection of original tunes is just a good time. The impishly clever & good-natured lyrical mischief combined with excellent music talents have made this CD not only fun but a solid Blues release. I didn't expect to like it but more than changed my mind while listening to the CD in my "mobile reviewing studio" (i.e. my car). Dr. Duke is about great music with a smile.

Deanna Bogart's "Real Time" could not have come at a better time. I have been anxious to hear and play some new Blues accented heavily by excellent keyboards and vocals. Bogart's "Real Time" does exactly that and more by adding her excellent saxophone skills to a great mix of tracks from country-western to an R&B-esque duet to great barrelhouse piano blues along with strong vocals with those jazzy undertones I love. Eight original Bogart tunes, vocal & instrumental tracks, I love the breadth and talent. Deanna Bogart has been solidly and immediately inducted into the TMB's "Women Who Sing the Blues" playlist. I just hope Ms. Bogart is as excited about that as I am and one of her newest fans.

Just to make things even more interesting, Blind Pig has just released its 30th Anniversary Collection compilation, a two CD with a bonus DVD set. I am a big fan of compilations. It is a great way to economically sample a large variety of artists and styles. Blind Pig does not skimp on this compilation.

Count on more than a couple of tracks for each of these two CDs on tomorrow's show. As per TMB tradition, if you want to hear some additional tracks from these two CDs or another other of the new CDs we have received at the station, just call or IM at the studio during the broadcast. I will do my best. AOL/AIM screen name : WWPV887 or call me at 802-654-2887

If you hear of some new Blues talent in the great state of Vermont or New England. Please let me know. All of you know I am all about supporting and celebrating my friends & neighbors in the local Blues music scene.

Very Best Wishes,

Check out the Full Schedule on WWPV

Good Evening TMB Fans -

WWPV has just completed a full week of its new schedule. There are just too many shows to cover in just one blog entry. So...I will just do 2..maybe...3...maybe 5... there are just so many to choose. Each show and the associated DJs bring fun and unique perspectives to each show. I know that I would never be exposed to nearly as much new music and diverse genres if I didn't listen to college radio regularly.

If you like the Blues, Soul, R&B, Smooth Jazz and Funk, as TMB listeners you should take the time to listen to Midnight Snack with Chris Bishop, Saturday Night, Midnight - 2am EST (playlist) and the Funky Good Time Power Hour, Sunday 5pm - 7pm EST. (playlist)

I also have to give a big shout-out to Scanlor who hosts Succulence, Sunday Noon - 3pm & to the hosts of The Pre-Game Show, Saturday, 5pm - 7pm. Scanlor not only bring a diverse and varied playlist to the fore. If that wasn't enough, his "Cake or Death" segment is reason enough to watch the show each and every week. With a fresh format, the old crew of "The Full Ponty" is back with "The Pre-Game Show" hosted by "Webmaster Rex" Vinnie, Chris & Jon. What I like about "The Pre-Game Show" and "Succulence" (applies to all WWPV shows, doesn't it?) is the witty unrehearsed banter and the rapier wit of these DJs. A further inducment for listening, you are going to hear music that you wouldn't normally listen to but find out you like. You may rediscover your lost love for reggae, punk, heavy metal or acoustical. As a further bonus, you just may hear the new music and bands long before the stodgy corporate music moguls decide it is worthy for their "media channels". How long has it been since you could say, "I listened to them long before they become huge stars"

If you just like real radio broadcasting, with actual DJs who answer the phone when you call, then I ask to support college radio. How you may ask? Just by listening and calling the DJs to provide encouragement. Don't forget to tell your friends and family. Listen to the webstream or preprogram a button on your car radio.

Don't forget call those DJs, say "Hi" and make a request. We love it especially when for the late night DJs. (remember..Those Monday Blues used to be Those Midnight Blues)

Cheers,

New Release : Jackie Payne Steve Edmonson Band

Hello TMB Fans -

As I promised, I would my best to bring you great new Blues release as soon as I can. It is my great pleasure to announce that the station has received "Master of the Game" by the Jackie Payne Steven Edmonson Band being released by Delta Groove Productions. It's smooth but high energy. It's passionate and tight but not edgey. It is a great fusion of Chicago-West Coast Blues & Soul with a dash of Gospel spice. With an official street date of October 17, you will have to wait to buy this CD. That's the bad news, but you can get to hear it on Those Monday Blues until that. If you like what you hear, just give me a call during the show & I will play another track. There is not a bad track on this CD.

Be prepared, yet again, in the 2d hour of the show where I concentrate most of the new music...but... If you call, I would be more than glad to play another track from any of the "New - Blues" CDs. All you need to do is go the this show's playlists and look for "New - Blues".

As usual, I keep the interesting info links for the show in the right column, including links to the WWPV home page, webstream, and previous playlists. Go check them out!

Cheers & Best Wishes,

In Remembrance of the 9/11 Tragedy

Tonight's show was dedicated to those who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks and their surviving families. I thought about trying to put together a show to reflect the sense of loss, senseless death and tragedy on the 5th Anniversary of the 9/11/2001 attacks on New York City, Washington DC and Flight 93. I realized I wasn't up to the task so I just tried to do a good show. If I have to say one thing, let's think about the 9/11/2001 attacks and the events that have followed more than once a year. That is the very least we owe those who died on that day. It is our duty to think clearly, objectively, and compassionately on how best to focus our efforts and contributions of time, money and effort to prevent this tragedy from happening again while maintaining the fundamental principles that we hold dear and founded this great nation.

Sincerely,

John Connors

Still More Great New Music : Mitch Kashmir's "Wake Up & Worry"

Howdy TMB listeners -

Just in last week, Mitch Kashmir's "Wake Up & Worry". I gave it a listen and was impressed. There are many good reasons why he won 2005 Blues Music Award "Debut Artist of the Year".

Look for more than a few tracks from this gem in the coming shows. The CD has a release date of September 19th.

That's what we try to do here at WWPV...bring you the newest music first.

Cheers,

My Latest Favorite CD : Albert Cumming's "Working Man"

Salutations TMB Fans -

I hope that the summer goes well for all of you out there. I have been absolutely delighted about the calls I have been receiving at the studio during my show. Thank You All!

It seems that 3-4 times a years I gush over a particular track, CD or artist. Kirk Fletcher, Janiva Magness. Well, right now, I am gushing over Albert Cummings'"Working Man". Some people have categorized it as "Blues Rock"...perhaps, it is still great solid electric Blues accessible to a wide audience. You can hear and feel the heart and soul Cummings puts into each track. Now, I am not prone to gush to make it a habit or to maintain a tradition. I do like this CD. I have received a few calls regarding the tracks I have aired. So...I will definitely be playing some more.

Hey Albert...Well Done!

Cheers,

Summer is almost Over...but...the New Music keeps coming!

Hello again TMB Fans -

Wow....definitely the summer Blues, hot weather, hectic schedules and vacations, all of these things tend to get in the way regulary updating this blog. It is not much of an excuse but it will endeavor to be more diligent in the future.

Perhaps, I was jolted from my creative doldrums by a listener's call into the show this evening. Dorothy from Shelburne, Vermont happened across 88.7 FM on her car radio during my show and enjoyed what she heard. Interestingly, I tend to get more calls during the acoustical blues segment of my show than any other. Dorothy called to get some clarification on the Cephas & Wiggins tracks I had played from their lastest effort, "Shoulder to Shoulder". Dorothy mentioned that she was going down to her favorite music store to purchase "Shoulder to Shoulder". I could not be happier because that is what I hope "Those Monday Blues" can do for the Blues music world. I am not quite the expert but I try to do my best to have good relationships with prominent Blues labels so TMB listeners have an opportunity to hear new music from contemporary and local Blues artists as well as the classics we all know and love.

Let's us all do our part to support Blues music. Buy a CD, attend a show, send a letter to your favorite artist or listen to a Blues radio program. Through these efforts, the Blues and other non-mainstream music will stay healthy and vibrant.

Speaking of Cephas & Wiggins' "Shoulder to Shoulder", it is a great CD. I enjoy each and every track. Many of my family members came into my "studio" as I reviewing the CD to ask what I was listening to. High praise indeed. The wonderful vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica are complemented but not overshadowed by bass and piano on several tracks. It is one of those CD that I just set on repeat and let play.

There was a lot of new music played tonight. I couldn't be happier. New and recent releases from Jeremy Spencer, Albert Cumming, Bill Perry, Cephas & Wiggins, Lil' Ed and the Blues Imperials, Guitar Shorty, Eddie Turner, Sue Foley, Janiva Magness, Eric Lindell, Lynwood Slim and Walter Trout. I just have to say again that the recent releases from the various labels have been a delight. I can't wait to share more tracks from these recent releases in the coming weeks.

I have to run. Thank you for all for your support. "Those Midnight Blues" will continue in the Monday, 5p-9p, time slot for the entire month of August. If there is a schedule change, you will all be the first to know.

Cheers,

John "OneChord" Connors

Still More New Music : Walter Trout & Friends

Howdy Doo TMB Listeners -

Just a quick note, a more detailed review will be forthcoming, but I received Walter Trout's latest CD, "Full Circle" (I should say 'Walter Trout & Friends') It was great. I was reviewing it in the studio during my broadcast and had to start playing tracks. I will gush more in later posting but needless to say, you will be hearing more tracks from Trout's "Full Circle" on subsequent shows. Well Done!

New Releases from Ruf Records

Hello again TMB Fans!

Just wanted to sing the praises of three new arrivals to the WWPV Blues collection from Ruf Records, Bernard Allison's "Energized - Live in Europe", Omar & the Howlers' "Bamboozled - Live in Germany" and Lister, Lyytinen & Parker's "Pilgrimage : Mississippi to Memphis"

For those of you know me, I am not prone to gushing or false praise, but I am really enjoying these CDs. I have been driving around town playing "Pilgrimage" and never hitting the 'next track' button on the CD player. Oh, be assured, I have favorite tracks but I am very impressed by these European musicians coming here to the US to work with two seasoned American producers in two fabled locations : Clarksdale, Mississippi & Memphis, Tennessee. This trio not only made the trip but did the work producing a completely authentic and enjoyable collection of "American Roots" music. Here's the summary...if I leave in my car's CD player, let it play, and without a thought of changing out, that is as close to a trial by fire in my book. "Pilgrimage" passes with flying colors.

Today I drove my middle daughter to a far-out-of-town soccer game in Stowe, VT. So I thought it be a good time to try Allison's "Energized". Both my daughter and I were definitely "Energized". She helped setup the winning score for her team but I already have favorite tracks. "Energized" is one of those live Blues CDs which will not be popular with commercial radio because ...well...it is a great Blues music. Allison and his crew lay down some righteous, intense jams, riff and inspired licks well beyond the comfortable 3 minute track preferred by most commercial radio. Thank goodness WWPV is commercial free college radio. This 2-Disc CD set just seems to fly by, really drawing the listener to a place...actually The Place where Allison and his crew were performing, sitting & listening in a European club, just the perfect size, and you have the best seat in the joint. I, particularly, liked "Too Many Women" because it highlighted the incredible bass work of Jassen Wilber. I do love a great Bluesman on the bass. Allison's guitar work is outstanding but without aggrandizing myself. Another standout on this collection was the keyboard work of Mike Vlahakis. Of course, firmly grounding this great quartet was Andrew Thomas on drums with solid rhythms and beats without in upfront and in the way. Well Done. I am always a little reserved when it comes to Live CDs but the sound quality is excellent and well engineered.

I definitely have more to say about Omar and the Howler's lastest effort, "Bamboozled" but it is late and I need to get some sleep. So, I will write more soon. I played tracks from all three CDs last week and counts on more tracks this week and in the future.

Another thing that I love...Europe bringing us here in the States great American Blues. I love the irony...more importantly, I love the music.

Please feel free to give me a call during the show (802-654-2887) or send an IM (AOL/AIM : WWPV887) and make a request during show times. Monday, 5pm-8pm EST.

Cheers,

Free Download of Eric Lindell's "Give It Time" !

Hello TMB Fans -

Just to let you know that Eric Lindell's "Give It Time" single which you heard here on WWPV even before the official release has been selected by iTunes as the "Discovery of the Week" for 5/23 - 5/29 and can be downloaded for free! If you don't remember, Vermont's very own Blues Harmonica "proto-legend", Greg Izor who was the first celebrity guest host on TMB, has the harmonica credit on this rising hit single. Booyah to you, Greg! (...and that Eric guy too ;-) )

Here is the link right to the iTunes this great track :

May 15th dedicated to the Life & Memory of Augie Carbunari

Today's Show, May 15th, is dedicated to the life and memory of Augustine "Augie" Carbunari who died in a tragic canoeing accident yesterday.

Deepest Sympathies to Augie's parents, loved ones and friends

New Music from Popa Chubby, Smokin' Joe Kubek & Bnois King

Hi Ho TMB Fans!

Yes!!! WWPV just received the lastest CD releases of Popa Chubby's "Stealin the Devil's Guitar" and "Smokin' Joe Kubek & Bnois King", "My Heart's in Texas".

I will definitely be playing some tracks from both of these CDs. Popa's CD got a full hearing in my mobile studio (my car) and was found to be very impressive. Popa's diversity within the Blues genre continues to amaze me, from slow burn soulful vocals to cutting-edge Blues rock. This could be his best CD ever. Smokin' Joe & Bnois King turn in, once again, a full fledge, dynamic live session CD.

Blues...just great live.

Premiere of "Those Monday Blues", Monday, 5p-8pm EST

Hello TMB Fans -

Here is the "executive summary" ...

"Those Monday Blues"
Monday, 5pm - 8pm EST
Request Line : 802-654-2887
AOL/AIM Screenname : WWPV887

Just a little announcement, the regular WWPV programming is done for the school year but "Those Midnight Blues" will not be disappearing from the schedule..per se. My show has been granted a coveted 5pm-8pm time slot on Mondays for the summer. Just as importantly, I don't have to change the "TMB" acronym. While the show's name was changed from "Those Midnight Blues" to "Those Monday Blues", it will be the same great Blues music except I will have 3 hours instead of two. Due to the earlier time slot, I am hoping for a variety of interesting guests & co-hosts that an earlier time slot can afford. Sadly, one of the biggest drawbacks will be having to turn down the volume which is not a problem at midnight in a nearly empty building. At 5pm, I will have to be more conscious of the neighbors.

My format will largely be the same but I am going to try to tighten it up ...just a tad. :-) Nah!!! It will be the same blocks of acoustic blues, electric blues, all decades, all genres with special emphasis on women who sing the Blues, local & regional Blues artists, and New Blues Releases as I can get them. In addition, I will be adding a local Blues event calendar segment at 20 minutes after the hour after the first public service announcment. As per TMB tradition, I will always endeavor to be fulfill requests from the listeners. The listeners are where I get my best ideas. :-)

I will probably leave the blog's name and show's name on the playlist service the same for now.

Cheers,

Still More New Music : Sue Foley

Welcome TMB Fans!

"Those Midnight Blues" is anxious to share still more new music to arrive at the studio, Sue Foley's latest effort, "New Used Car". Sue Foley has been referred to as "The Canadian Queen of the Blues Guitar". This will be her first studio release in four years. So far, I am liking what I am hearing. As you all know, there is a special place for female Blues artists on this show especially for those who are of the player-songwriter-vocalist stripe like Foley. She plays a mean axe and has the pipes to go with it combined with original songwriting. I am very excited to share these new tracks with you. She wrote or co-wrote 11 out of the 12 tracks on "New Used Car"and has received a record setting 17 of Canada's Maple Blues Awards.

But wait there is more!

Due to Foley's inspiration and contributing effort lead to a CD compilation of "Blues Guitar Women", a documentation of women guitar players from the past to the present. The 2-disc set is available now and a forthcoming book is in the works. More information on that project as it becomes available.

Definitely expect to hear a few tracks from "New Used Car" this week along with other contemporary artists and those artists from the past that inspired them.

Cheers,

New Acoustic Blues : Catfish Keith's "Sweet Pea"

Salutations, Midnight Blues Fans !

John Sheehey, the venerable sage of the WWPV Folk Show, sensed my recent yen to play more acoustic Blues, (especially slide resonator guitars) and put me onto Catfish Keith's newest release, "Sweet Pea". I am definitely keeping Catfish Keith in my acoustic blues rotation for those late nights where I want to sink into the twilight and hear "the Delta" here in Vermont. Expect to hear more of the "Catfish" during my more reflective moments during the show.

Cheers & Right back atcha!

Still More New Music : Greg Izor & Richie Barron

Greetings & Salutations Esteemed Fans of Those Midnight Blues !

I just received a great demo CD from Vermont's very own Blues harp "proto-legend", Greg Izor. (Although Greg lives in New Orleans now) Not only does he garner the harmonica credit on the lead track on Eric Lindell's newest release, but he has some outstanding vocals on these demo tracks which I will definitely be playing on the next show (Wed 3/28/2006). Greg will back in town soon. As I get more details, look for them here. (how could anyone stand away from Vermont for long?...even if you are right in the middle of the New Orleans music scene)

Richie Barron, "The Barron of the Blues" & "the Funk 'n' Bluz Crew", who I first encountered on SoundClick.com while I was looking for some new Jump Blues tracks for my show has been featured much more than once or twice on my shows. Let me tell you, not only can he play a great Blues guitar, sing and write original tunes but he puts together a great horn section. If I was ever back in California, I would definitely love to hear him and his band live. Fortunately of us on the East Coast, Richie also knows how to produced great CDs. Richie sent me three of his latest compilations, "Hwy. 2000" (all original tunes), "Alive in 05", & "That's Why I Sing Da Blues". Richie's tracks will always be part of my permanent Jump Blues playlist. In addition, these CDs are well engineered, mixed and produced given that many of the tracks are recorded from live events. I can't stop playing them. I love the "No Trouble Tonight" jam on "That's Why I Sing Da Blues" where each band member struts their stuff. Believe me, they have got the chops. In addition to his original tunes, Richie and The Crew do some excellent covers as well I am especially fond of his arrangement of BB King's "That's Why I Sing the Blues". I love those horns ...and every thing else too.

We have received more than 12 CDs worth of new music to the station since January 1st. I just want to say it has all been good to great. Along with Eric Lindell's upcoming release, Alligator has put together another one of their omnibus compilations titled "35 x 35", a 2-disc set of 35 years of various Alligator artists. Truth be told, I own a fair number of Alligator, Blind Pig and other compilations from various labels. It is a great way to just dive in and add a number of great Blues tracks to your personal collections. Alligator's newest compilation is great and here is the bonus, if you own the another Alligator compilations...no worries...there are no repeat tracks. Now that is paying attentions to your customers. I do have to say...Alligator did skimp either. There are no weak tracks and an excellent variety. Thank you! After I finish my taxes and hopefully receive a modest refund, I will gladly add another Alligator compilation to my personal collection. Thank you Josh & Alligator records.

A wonderful surprise to me, a lover of female Blues vocalists, Kirk Fletcher's "Shades of Blue" had a great female vocalist that sounded very very familiar. Well, after reading the liner notes, I was thrilled to see that Janiva Magness was credited for those vocals. As you all know, I am one of her newest fans, so not only do I get to listen her new release, "Do I Move You?" but more of Janiva's fabulous powerhouse Blues growling and belting on Kirk Fletcher's Shades of Blues along with his great guitar work. It's like a little bit of Christmas around here.

The New Music Keeps Pouring In : Eric Lindell

Hi Ho TMB Fans -

It is that time of the year and the new releases are coming. Booyah! Just received Eric Lindell's new upcoming release "Change in the Weather". I will definitely be playing the first track, "Give It Time" featuring a harmonica credit to Vermont's very own Blues harmonica "proto-legend" Greg Izor. If you remember, Greg was my very special Guest Host on TMB back in January of this year. Congrats on the track credit and you blow a mean harp my friend. I have listened to the entire CD and enjoyed every track.

WWPV has also received some new titles featuring the Hollywood Blues, Kirk Flecther, Rod Piazza & the Mighty Flyers, and Mitch Kashmar. Also we have been very fortunate (Thank you Frank of Delta Groove) to get into the station in time for my various Blues Music Award features, The Mannish Boys' "That Represent Man" which has been nominated for Blues album of the year. You should expect to hear some of the great tracks and you will know why it was nominated.

Tonight, My intention is to feature tracks from all of the nominees for the 2006 BMA "Pinetop Perkins" Award for outstanding Blues piano player of the year : Marica Ball, Honey Piazza, Dr. John, Jon Cleary & Henry Butler. I just need to chase down a Henry Butler track.

I hope you can make it tonight.

Cheers,

New Music from JW-Jones Blues & More

Hey Ho & Hi Ho Midnight Blues Fans !

I received some new music only just yesterday just before the show, JW-Blues Band's soon-to-be released "Kissing in 29 Days". JW Jones, a 25 year old Canadian guitarist, for his 4th CD decided to return one of my favorite era, Kansas City swing & jazz. I will say I enjoyed each track of this up-coming CD. Of course, you know that I love Blues bands with horn sections and I was not disappointed. The cover of Ray Charles' "Hallelujah, I Love Her So" features a full horn section headlined by David 'Fathead' Newman' on tenor sax. There are 11 originals and 3 covers providing some comfortable familiarity along with new melodies. While JW is an excellent electric Blues guitarist, he is less "out front" with his playing as you would expect in a Jump/Swing Blues band working with and showcasing the "Wind Chill Factor Horns", thus showing his increasing maturity and seasoning as a player and also as the producer of his latest effort. You will definitely be more tracks from this fun & upbeat CD. Electric Blues with Horns..It does not get better than that. Yes, folks, this CD definitely pass my "car test" for Blues CDs.

My future are going to keep highlighting of the various Blues Music Award nominees. We heard tracks from all of the nominees for "contemporary female artist of the year" : Debbie Davies, Susan Tedeschi, Janiva Magness, Shemekia Copeland, and Marica Ball. This is a great field and anyone of them could win. Whoever wins, she should definitely feel proud because of the very talented group of nominees.

Next show, I will feature some tracks from the "comeback band" category as well as others.

Please feel free to offer a suggestion or comment.

Cheers,

New Music from Janiva Magness!

Hello Again Midnight Blues Fans ...

Yesterday, I just received Janiva Magness' new CD, "Do I Move You?" which is officially hitting the streets on March 8 (gulp...yesterday). After listening to each track several times, I must say I am impressed and anxious to play a few tracks. Janiva has a variety of different Blues genres on the CD as compared to the resounding acoustical "Bury Him at the Crossroads". There are some Motown sounding R&Bs, rags, shuffles, and swings with a more electric feel. Despite the plugged-in & amp'ed up sound, Janiva's vocals still stand out loud, clear and with her usual intimate intensity. She has a new CD and also nominated for Blues Music Awards' "Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year" along with Debbie Davies, Marcia Ball, Shemekia Copeland, and Susan Tedeschi. I am feeling inspired to play a couple of monster sets of "Women Who Sing the Blues". Oh Yeah ... I do think so, definitely.

Along with Janiva's new CD, Northern Blues fixed me with some of their more recent CDs which I have have really enjoyed. Expect to hear more Doug Cox & Sam Hurrie's "Hungry Ghosts", Brian Blain's "Overqualifed for the Blues", Watermelon Slim and the Workers, and Dan Treanor & Frankie Lee's 2004 release, "African Wind". Northern Blues is a great label with the ability to find interesting and refreshing talent others might overlook. They seem to have a good handle the acoustical blues artists to the North. I could not be more delighted to have renew our friendship with this label.

Cheers,

Not Fully Recovered, but Back with New Music!

There is a new release from Watermelon Slim & The Workers, Brian Blain's "Overqualifed for the Blues", Doug Cox & Sam Harrie's "Hungry Ghosts", Dan Treanor & Frankie Lee's 2004 release "African Wind" (Blues played with hand made African instruments, Dan calls it "Afrosippi"). From Alligator, we received a new Little Charlie & the Nightcats 2005 release "Nine Lives" to celebrate their three Blues Music Award nominations. I will also be highlighting Marcia Ball to celebrate her Grammy and Blues Music Award nominations.

Of course, requests will always be given my full, undivided attention and effort. Keep those calls and IMs coming in. (Request Line : 802-654-2887, AOL Screen Name : WWPV887)

Burlington Vermont Local Blues Music Scene

Since Christmas night, I have been making a small effort to enjoy and celebrate the local Blues music scene here in the Burlington, Vermont area.

If you listen to my show, you know how strongly I support local live music. I just don't "talk the talk", I "walk the walk" the best I can, when I can.

We are fortunately to have some really great local live music which requires only that you show up. yes, it's free. No cover charges and no drink minimums. It just doesn't get better than that.

Nectar's has been hosting a number of local & regional Blues acts for years. Currently, on Tuesday nights, Nectar's hosts Bluesday featuring the Nerbak brothers. Ladies and Gentlement, this is a great regular Blues jam with many great local musicians sitting in and getting down. I can't wait to go to more Bluesday jams. Of course, check Nectar's schedule for other Blues acts.

Parima's has providing a venue for local jazz and related genres. It is a wonderful "Jazz Bar". The musicians say it's like playing in a living room. The space is warm and inviting. The music is top shelf. I have heard Madera, Matt Wright Group and attended James O'Halloran's "The Nashville Session" CD release party there. Some wonderful pictures were taken by Bob Grego and posted on the web which gives you a sense of the atmosphere. While it is not Blues, it is still great music. Oh...the Thai food is excellent.

Our venerable Lincoln Inn in Essex Junction is also supporting the local music scene with lots of live music. The newly redone bar and music room provide plenty of sitting and an intimate atmosphere for up-close and personal Blues. So far, I have seen Jenni Johnson and The Eames Brothers. Both perfect acts for the venue. Unfortunately, my in-laws were in town and I couldn't make it down the street to hear The Nobby Reed Project, a regular on my playlist. Fortunately, I have seen Nobby live and he and his crew put on a great show. All three acts, Jenni Johnson & Friends (she is great, oh yeah...smooth) , The Eames Brothers (excellent solid Blues roots), and The Nobby Reed Project are perfect acts for Lincoln Inn's regular Thursday evening Blues Night. In addition, the Lincoln Inn has been hosting a Folk Music night (Tuesday) and some excellent cover bands, like Dark Horse, on Friday and Saturday.

Oh...did I forget to mention? All of these shows are free. All we have to do to support local live Blues music is show up. What could be simpler? Buy a couple of beverages, sit down and enjoy the show.

Cheers,

OneChord
