Still More New Music : Greg Izor & Richie Barron

Greetings & Salutations Esteemed Fans of Those Midnight Blues !

I just received a great demo CD from Vermont's very own Blues harp "proto-legend", Greg Izor. (Although Greg lives in New Orleans now) Not only does he garner the harmonica credit on the lead track on Eric Lindell's newest release, but he has some outstanding vocals on these demo tracks which I will definitely be playing on the next show (Wed 3/28/2006). Greg will back in town soon. As I get more details, look for them here. (how could anyone stand away from Vermont for long?...even if you are right in the middle of the New Orleans music scene)

Richie Barron, "The Barron of the Blues" & "the Funk 'n' Bluz Crew", who I first encountered on SoundClick.com while I was looking for some new Jump Blues tracks for my show has been featured much more than once or twice on my shows. Let me tell you, not only can he play a great Blues guitar, sing and write original tunes but he puts together a great horn section. If I was ever back in California, I would definitely love to hear him and his band live. Fortunately of us on the East Coast, Richie also knows how to produced great CDs. Richie sent me three of his latest compilations, "Hwy. 2000" (all original tunes), "Alive in 05", & "That's Why I Sing Da Blues". Richie's tracks will always be part of my permanent Jump Blues playlist. In addition, these CDs are well engineered, mixed and produced given that many of the tracks are recorded from live events. I can't stop playing them. I love the "No Trouble Tonight" jam on "That's Why I Sing Da Blues" where each band member struts their stuff. Believe me, they have got the chops. In addition to his original tunes, Richie and The Crew do some excellent covers as well I am especially fond of his arrangement of BB King's "That's Why I Sing the Blues". I love those horns ...and every thing else too.

We have received more than 12 CDs worth of new music to the station since January 1st. I just want to say it has all been good to great. Along with Eric Lindell's upcoming release, Alligator has put together another one of their omnibus compilations titled "35 x 35", a 2-disc set of 35 years of various Alligator artists. Truth be told, I own a fair number of Alligator, Blind Pig and other compilations from various labels. It is a great way to just dive in and add a number of great Blues tracks to your personal collections. Alligator's newest compilation is great and here is the bonus, if you own the another Alligator compilations...no worries...there are no repeat tracks. Now that is paying attentions to your customers. I do have to say...Alligator did skimp either. There are no weak tracks and an excellent variety. Thank you! After I finish my taxes and hopefully receive a modest refund, I will gladly add another Alligator compilation to my personal collection. Thank you Josh & Alligator records.

A wonderful surprise to me, a lover of female Blues vocalists, Kirk Fletcher's "Shades of Blue" had a great female vocalist that sounded very very familiar. Well, after reading the liner notes, I was thrilled to see that Janiva Magness was credited for those vocals. As you all know, I am one of her newest fans, so not only do I get to listen her new release, "Do I Move You?" but more of Janiva's fabulous powerhouse Blues growling and belting on Kirk Fletcher's Shades of Blues along with his great guitar work. It's like a little bit of Christmas around here.

Cheers,

The New Music Keeps Pouring In : Eric Lindell

Hi Ho TMB Fans -

It is that time of the year and the new releases are coming. Booyah! Just received Eric Lindell's new upcoming release "Change in the Weather". I will definitely be playing the first track, "Give It Time" featuring a harmonica credit to Vermont's very own Blues harmonica "proto-legend" Greg Izor. If you remember, Greg was my very special Guest Host on TMB back in January of this year. Congrats on the track credit and you blow a mean harp my friend. I have listened to the entire CD and enjoyed every track.

WWPV has also received some new titles featuring the Hollywood Blues, Kirk Flecther, Rod Piazza & the Mighty Flyers, and Mitch Kashmar. Also we have been very fortunate (Thank you Frank of Delta Groove) to get into the station in time for my various Blues Music Award features, The Mannish Boys' "That Represent Man" which has been nominated for Blues album of the year. You should expect to hear some of the great tracks and you will know why it was nominated.

Tonight, My intention is to feature tracks from all of the nominees for the 2006 BMA "Pinetop Perkins" Award for outstanding Blues piano player of the year : Marica Ball, Honey Piazza, Dr. John, Jon Cleary & Henry Butler. I just need to chase down a Henry Butler track.

I hope you can make it tonight.

Cheers,

New Music from JW-Jones Blues & More

Hey Ho & Hi Ho Midnight Blues Fans !

I received some new music only just yesterday just before the show, JW-Blues Band's soon-to-be released "Kissing in 29 Days". JW Jones, a 25 year old Canadian guitarist, for his 4th CD decided to return one of my favorite era, Kansas City swing & jazz. I will say I enjoyed each track of this up-coming CD. Of course, you know that I love Blues bands with horn sections and I was not disappointed. The cover of Ray Charles' "Hallelujah, I Love Her So" features a full horn section headlined by David 'Fathead' Newman' on tenor sax. There are 11 originals and 3 covers providing some comfortable familiarity along with new melodies. While JW is an excellent electric Blues guitarist, he is less "out front" with his playing as you would expect in a Jump/Swing Blues band working with and showcasing the "Wind Chill Factor Horns", thus showing his increasing maturity and seasoning as a player and also as the producer of his latest effort. You will definitely be more tracks from this fun & upbeat CD. Electric Blues with Horns..It does not get better than that. Yes, folks, this CD definitely pass my "car test" for Blues CDs.

My future are going to keep highlighting of the various Blues Music Award nominees. We heard tracks from all of the nominees for "contemporary female artist of the year" : Debbie Davies, Susan Tedeschi, Janiva Magness, Shemekia Copeland, and Marica Ball. This is a great field and anyone of them could win. Whoever wins, she should definitely feel proud because of the very talented group of nominees.

Next show, I will feature some tracks from the "comeback band" category as well as others.

Please feel free to offer a suggestion or comment.

Cheers,

New Music from Janiva Magness!

Hello Again Midnight Blues Fans ...

Yesterday, I just received Janiva Magness' new CD, "Do I Move You?" which is officially hitting the streets on March 8 (gulp...yesterday). After listening to each track several times, I must say I am impressed and anxious to play a few tracks. Janiva has a variety of different Blues genres on the CD as compared to the resounding acoustical "Bury Him at the Crossroads". There are some Motown sounding R&Bs, rags, shuffles, and swings with a more electric feel. Despite the plugged-in & amp'ed up sound, Janiva's vocals still stand out loud, clear and with her usual intimate intensity. She has a new CD and also nominated for Blues Music Awards' "Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year" along with Debbie Davies, Marcia Ball, Shemekia Copeland, and Susan Tedeschi. I am feeling inspired to play a couple of monster sets of "Women Who Sing the Blues". Oh Yeah ... I do think so, definitely.

Along with Janiva's new CD, Northern Blues fixed me with some of their more recent CDs which I have have really enjoyed. Expect to hear more Doug Cox & Sam Hurrie's "Hungry Ghosts", Brian Blain's "Overqualifed for the Blues", Watermelon Slim and the Workers, and Dan Treanor & Frankie Lee's 2004 release, "African Wind". Northern Blues is a great label with the ability to find interesting and refreshing talent others might overlook. They seem to have a good handle the acoustical blues artists to the North. I could not be more delighted to have renew our friendship with this label.

Cheers,
