Still More New Music : Greg Izor & Richie Barron

Greetings & Salutations Esteemed Fans of Those Midnight Blues !

I just received a great demo CD from Vermont's very own Blues harp "proto-legend", Greg Izor. (Although Greg lives in New Orleans now) Not only does he garner the harmonica credit on the lead track on Eric Lindell's newest release, but he has some outstanding vocals on these demo tracks which I will definitely be playing on the next show (Wed 3/28/2006). Greg will back in town soon. As I get more details, look for them here. (how could anyone stand away from Vermont for long?...even if you are right in the middle of the New Orleans music scene)

Richie Barron, "The Barron of the Blues" & "the Funk 'n' Bluz Crew", who I first encountered on SoundClick.com while I was looking for some new Jump Blues tracks for my show has been featured much more than once or twice on my shows. Let me tell you, not only can he play a great Blues guitar, sing and write original tunes but he puts together a great horn section. If I was ever back in California, I would definitely love to hear him and his band live. Fortunately of us on the East Coast, Richie also knows how to produced great CDs. Richie sent me three of his latest compilations, "Hwy. 2000" (all original tunes), "Alive in 05", & "That's Why I Sing Da Blues". Richie's tracks will always be part of my permanent Jump Blues playlist. In addition, these CDs are well engineered, mixed and produced given that many of the tracks are recorded from live events. I can't stop playing them. I love the "No Trouble Tonight" jam on "That's Why I Sing Da Blues" where each band member struts their stuff. Believe me, they have got the chops. In addition to his original tunes, Richie and The Crew do some excellent covers as well I am especially fond of his arrangement of BB King's "That's Why I Sing the Blues". I love those horns ...and every thing else too.

We have received more than 12 CDs worth of new music to the station since January 1st. I just want to say it has all been good to great. Along with Eric Lindell's upcoming release, Alligator has put together another one of their omnibus compilations titled "35 x 35", a 2-disc set of 35 years of various Alligator artists. Truth be told, I own a fair number of Alligator, Blind Pig and other compilations from various labels. It is a great way to just dive in and add a number of great Blues tracks to your personal collections. Alligator's newest compilation is great and here is the bonus, if you own the another Alligator compilations...no worries...there are no repeat tracks. Now that is paying attentions to your customers. I do have to say...Alligator did skimp either. There are no weak tracks and an excellent variety. Thank you! After I finish my taxes and hopefully receive a modest refund, I will gladly add another Alligator compilation to my personal collection. Thank you Josh & Alligator records.

A wonderful surprise to me, a lover of female Blues vocalists, Kirk Fletcher's "Shades of Blue" had a great female vocalist that sounded very very familiar. Well, after reading the liner notes, I was thrilled to see that Janiva Magness was credited for those vocals. As you all know, I am one of her newest fans, so not only do I get to listen her new release, "Do I Move You?" but more of Janiva's fabulous powerhouse Blues growling and belting on Kirk Fletcher's Shades of Blues along with his great guitar work. It's like a little bit of Christmas around here.

Cheers,

One Chord
